ABOUT

Ananda

Set within the former palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal, high above Rishikesh and the Ganges Valley, Ananda in the Himalayas is one of the world’s most acclaimed destination spas. From the moment guests arrive, the air feels clearer, the pace slower, and the horizon wider — a sanctuary removed from the everyday.

At the heart of the estate lies a 25,000 sq ft spa, with over 20 treatment rooms, consultation suites and hydrotherapy facilities. Each stay begins with a personal consultation with Ayurvedic physicians and wellness experts, crafting a programme tailored to stress, sleep, hormonal balance, detoxification, metabolic health or emotional wellbeing. Here, every treatment is a step in a structured journey of restoration.

Days follow a considered rhythm. Mornings may begin with yoga or pranayama in the pavilion, overlooking the valley, or meditation rooted in classical Vedanta philosophy. Afternoons are spent in therapeutic treatments, bespoke fitness sessions or by the temperature-controlled outdoor pool. Treks, nature walks and philosophical discussions connect guests to the landscape and its centuries-old traditions, offering perspective as much as relaxation.

Rooms and suites are designed for calm. Opening onto private balconies or terraces, interiors combine natural woods, soft textiles and subtle Indian detailing. Every element, from lighting to layout, encourages restorative sleep, mental clarity and a sense of stillness.

Cuisine is central to the Ananda experience. Menus follow Ayurvedic principles, tailored to each guest’s constitution and programme goals, using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Meals are taken in the main restaurant, on the terrace overlooking the valley, or in private settings, while cooking demonstrations and nutritional consultations extend the wellness experience beyond the spa.

What truly sets Ananda apart is the depth and harmony of every element. Treatments, philosophy and hospitality are woven together within a framework rooted in centuries-old Indian traditions, refined with contemporary expertise. The experience restores balance, awakens clarity, and nourishes the body and spirit, leaving a lasting sense of renewal that continues long after guests return home.

  • Learn more about Ananda addressing SDG4

Through the Ananda Skill Development Institute, underprivileged women receive fully sponsored three-month training in wellness therapy, including massage, Ayurveda, and holistic healing techniques. Graduates are guaranteed employment in leading hotels and spas, enabling them to achieve financial independence and improve the livelihoods of their families.

Over 50 women have been trained and placed in jobs, demonstrating a tangible increase in employability and economic opportunity for marginalised communities.

The program prioritises women from disadvantaged backgrounds, provides safe housing when needed, and ensures equal pay and opportunity within Ananda’s workforce. By focusing on individuals from underrepresented communities and supporting local schools in Narendranagar with wellness education, infrastructure, and yoga programs.

Through this combination of vocational training, community education, and gender-inclusive employment, Ananda demonstrates how education can be a lever for empowerment, equality, and measurable social transformation.

  • Learn more about Ananda addressing SDG6

Ananda operates a zero-wastewater system with a MBBR sewage treatment plant and effluent treatment plant, treating all greywater and recycling it for landscaping across its 100-acre estate. Sub-meters monitor consumption, and leak detection has reduced daily water use by approximately 50 kilolitres.

Automated sprinklers, drip irrigation, and synthetic turf on the golf course further optimise usage.

Guests and staff have access to clean, safe water through the on-site bottling plant, eliminating over 100,000 single-use plastic bottles per year and reducing exposure to potential contaminants.

Only 20% of the property is built upon, preserving green cover and native flora, and in-house herb and Ayurvedic gardens sustain both therapeutic and ecological value.

Through these integrated measures, Ananda demonstrates that water efficiency, health, and ecosystem preservation are interlinked, creating measurable environmental and wellness outcomes while reducing strain on local resources and supporting biodiversity.

  • Learn more about Ananda addressing SDG12

Ananda has eliminated over 100,000 single-use plastic water bottles annually through its on-site reusable glass water bottling system and uses stainless steel dispensers for toiletries, saving an additional 7,500 plastic bottles per year. Waste segregation is rigorously implemented, including e-waste recycling, and green chemicals are used for cleaning and sanitising, reducing environmental impact.

Daily wellness menus use locally sourced, seasonal, and organic produce (80% of ingredients), grown partly on-site in Ayurvedic herb gardens. Food preparation is optimised to limit storage and reduce waste, and leftover oils are converted into biodiesel, while other food waste is sent to local pig farms.

Heat pumps replace diesel hot water boilers, saving ~1,200 kg CO₂ per day, and LED lighting across guest rooms, public spaces, and landscaping reduces ~408 kg CO₂ per day. Electrically operated laundry equipment further reduces fossil fuel use.

Only 20% of the property is built, preserving 80% green space, supporting native flora and fauna, and maintaining in-house herb gardens that sustain both wellness services and local ecosystems.
