Inspiring Impact

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, known for its dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation, recently had the honour of having a new plant species named after the resort: Six Senses Turmeric.

General Manager Andrew Whiffen's keen eye spotted the unique plant during a hike with guests, leading to the documentation and subsequent recognition of this newfound species.

The Six Senses Turmeric, scientifically named ‘Curcuma sixsensesensis’, is a striking flower belonging to the Ginger family, characterized by its short stature of 12 to 15 inches and delicate cream white to pale yellow interior.

Its presence in unprotected forest areas highlights the fragility of its habitat, prompting scientists to advocate for its inclusion in the IUCN Red List as an endangered plant species.

By showcasing the Six Senses Turmeric to guests, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay continues to champion conservation and reverence for the natural world. This new plant epitomizes the resort's commitment to sustainability and serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human activities and ecosystem preservation.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is deeply committed to enhancing educational opportunities for local students by way of breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting equality.

Annually, they award merit-based scholarships valued at $2,000, not only as financial aid but also as a pathway to a brighter future. Scholarship recipients receive a 6-month internship and a 2-year full-time position at the resort, setting the stage for sustainable progress and advancement.

The resort proudly continues its English Club for primary students, now in its second year. Since 2022, dedicated volunteers from the local university have been working with 30 children every weekend to improve their conversational English skills.

In 2023, they conducted 72 classes, nurturing a passion for language and communication among the young members of the community.

In addition to their educational efforts, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay remains steadfast in their dedication to environmental conservation.

In 2023, their community waste management project made a positive impact on 25,304 individuals in the local area. By providing trash nets to fishermen's boats, distributing trash bins in various communities, and actively participating in beach clean-up events, they are actively working to protect our shared environment.

Furthermore, 2023 saw the launch of wildlife conservation classes for local schools, aiming to instil a sense of responsibility and care for the natural world in the upcoming generation.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is deeply committed to preserving endangered species like the black-shanked douc langur, a rare primate found in Southern Vietnam and Eastern Cambodia.

These langurs, listed in the IUCN Red List and Vietnam’s Red Book, are cherished inhabitants near the Hon Heo mountain area.

The resort shares its environment with these langurs, allowing guests to witness their beauty at the reservoir during the dry season.

Since 2020, a partnership with the NGO Green Viet has led to significant progress in langur conservation. Through the efforts of biologists, the langur population near the resort has grown from 109 to 170 individuals by 2023.

The resort team takes pride in fostering a habitat that sustains 19 plant species vital to the langur's diet and studying their unique behaviours. To enhance conservation efforts, a resident biologist from GreenViet collaborates with the team to provide enriching wildlife experiences and conservation activities for guests.

Visitors are encouraged to join expert-led hiking expeditions to gain a deeper insight into forest ecosystems and the crucial conservation work being undertaken for the langurs.

The resort offers activities like the Langur Discovery excursions in the morning and educational programs in local schools and communities to raise awareness not just about langur conservation, but also about the broader significance of preserving wildlife in their natural settings.
