ABOUT
Fogo island
Set on stilts above ancient rock, facing the wild North Atlantic, Fogo Island Inn stands at the meeting point of land and sea, strikingly contemporary in form yet deeply rooted in the fishing heritage of the island.
Inside, the Inn reveals itself quietly. There are just 29 rooms and suites, each turned deliberately towards the ocean, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame shifting light, drifting icebergs and the constant movement of water. Interiors are tactile and thoughtful: handcrafted furniture and textiles created by local artisans sit alongside traditional patchwork quilts, weaving together heritage and modernity without spectacle.
That same sense of place shapes the kitchen. The menu changes with the seasons and the sea, drawing on cod, lobster and snow crab landed nearby, alongside root vegetables, preserves and botanicals gathered from the island’s rugged terrain. Dining unfolds against an ocean backdrop, where the light shifts from silver to indigo and conversation settles into an easy rhythm. It is food that feels honest and grounded, deeply connected to the landscape from which it comes.
Wellbeing here is elemental rather than elaborate. On the rooftop, wood-fired hot tubs and a sauna look out over the Atlantic, steam rising into salt-tinged air as wind and waves provide a constant soundtrack. Indoors, treatments and quiet spaces offer restoration, yet much of the renewal happens outdoors — walking coastal paths carved by centuries of footsteps, breathing deeply in the bracing sea air, or standing on ancient rock as seabirds circle overhead.
Days are shaped less by schedules than by weather and curiosity. Guests may find themselves in conversation with a local host, learning the story of the island’s fishing stages, or discovering traditional crafts that continue to define community life. There is an authenticity to these encounters, not performance, but participation in a living culture.
A stay at Fogo Island Inn feels both expansive and grounding. The vastness of the Atlantic offers perspective; the warmth of the community offers connection. There is a rare clarity in being surrounded by so much sky and sea, a sense of standing at the edge of something immense while feeling entirely held within it.

Learn more about Fogo Island addressing SDG8
Fogo Island Inn was founded as a deliberate response to economic decline in a remote community that had relied heavily on the cod fishery for generations. Rather than arriving as an outside investor or a traditional hotel chain, the Inn was developed as a social enterprise, designed to create meaningful employment, support local businesses and reinvest revenue back into the island.
The Inn operates on a not-for-profit basis, returning 100% of operating surpluses to the community through the Shorefast Foundation. This reinvestment supports local services, cultural programmes, community projects and the long-term wellbeing of the island. The Inn also prioritises local hiring: many team members are residents of Fogo Island and nearby communities, providing stable work opportunities in a region where seasonal employment is common.
To make the economic impact visible and understandable, Fogo Island Inn shares an Economic Nutrition label, which shows guests how spending at the Inn translates into wages, local procurement and community investment. In this way, the Inn demonstrates a new model of tourism — one that does not extract value, but circulates it locally, strengthening the social and economic fabric of a rural community.

Fogo Island Inn is not designed to be a separate destination, but a part of the island’s ongoing story. The building’s architecture echoes the forms of traditional fishing stages and local structures, while the Inn’s placement and layout were chosen to respect ancient footpaths, viewpoints and the natural landscape. The result is an environment that feels rooted in place, rather than imposed upon it.
The Inn’s connection to community is not limited to design. The Community Host programme enables guests to meet local residents who share their knowledge, skills and cultural traditions through meaningful experiences. Hosts may invite visitors into their homes, workshops, or boats, offering insight into the everyday life of Fogo Island. This programme helps to keep local culture alive by providing economic opportunities for artists, craftspeople, fishers and storytellers.
Traditional crafts such as quilting, woodworking, boat building and textile arts are supported not as relics, but as living practices that continue to evolve. Through these activities, Fogo Island Inn helps ensure that the island’s cultural identity remains strong, accessible and respected — offering guests a deeper connection to the place beyond the scenery.
responsible consumption & production
Learn how luxury here is defined by thoughtful sourcing, local craft, and lasting design.
Learn more about Fogo Island addressing SDG12
Responsible consumption is central to how Fogo Island Inn operates, shaping choices across food, design, sourcing and daily operations. Around 80% of the food served at the Inn is sourced locally, including sustainably harvested seafood, wild-foraged ingredients, and produce from nearby farms. This approach supports local food systems and reduces the environmental impact of long supply chains.
The Inn’s commitment to responsible production extends to its interiors. Furniture, textiles and design elements are created through Fogo Island Workshops, which uses local materials and craftsmanship to produce durable objects designed to last for decades. The workshops also emphasise repair, reuse and upcycling — ensuring that materials and products are kept in use for as long as possible rather than discarded.
Energy efficiency and waste reduction are embedded in daily operations, with systems designed to minimise impact and conserve resources. The Inn’s approach to luxury is therefore rooted in thoughtful decision-making and a respect for the natural environment, reinforcing the belief that quality and care are the true markers of sustainable hospitality.
