Inspiring Impact

The reserve has implemented a holistic approach to sustainable energy and environmental stewardship, setting a remarkable example for earth-conscious hospitality.

The construction of the reserve, spanning over five years, focussed on sustainable energy practices and environmental preservation.

Eschewing heavy machinery to prevent damage to coral reefs and avoid unnecessary deforestation exemplifies a commitment to minimising environmental impact and promoting sustainable development.

The reserve prioritised the use of natural materials such as bamboo, driftwood, and locally sourced rock. This choice not only reduced carbon footprint but also promoted the conservation of natural resources.

The majority of interior elements are crafted by skilled Indonesian artisans, highlighting a commitment to local sourcing and cultural preservation through indigenous craftsmanship.

Through the strategic deployment of renewable energy sources, including 1,175 floating solar panels, 90 rooftop panels, and 55 batteries, alongside innovative measures such as utilising generator-set steam for hot water production and integrating solar panels in each villa, the resort has significantly reduced its reliance on non-renewable energy by covering 40% of its energy needs.

The commitment extends beyond energy to water conservation, where initiatives like desalination, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater treatment ensure sustainable management practices.

Guests and staff are encouraged to participate through the use of reusable water bottles, eliminating single-use plastics and reducing plastic pollution.

Wastewater undergoes thorough treatment before being repurposed for irrigation and toilet flushing, resulting in a remarkable 15-25% recycle rate of greywater and the avoidance of up to 3,000 plastic bottles per month.

The island's lush terrestrial ecosystem, adorned with 576 majestic trees, including Keruing, Sindora coriacea, and Canarium hirsutum, alongside six species of vital mangroves, serves as a beacon of ecological richness and resilience.

Embracing a holistic approach to conservation, the island undertakes initiatives such as the establishment of a Permaculture Garden and sourcing produce from local organic farms through the Anambas Foundation.

This endeavour not only fulfils 20% of the resort's fruit and vegetable needs but also contributes to climate resilience by enhancing soil health, promoting biodiversity, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional agriculture.

The island's comprehensive waste management strategies, including waste sorting, recycling, and composting, demonstrate a dedication to minimising environmental impact and promoting community economic development.

Through these efforts, Bawah Island diverts 40% of its waste to support local initiatives while annually collecting 10 tons of marine debris, contributing to the preservation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Within Bawah's marine protected zone, a comprehensive approach to marine conservation is evident.

Expert marine biologists protect over 1,500 turtle hatchings annually, safeguarded from threats like poaching and natural predators such as monitor lizards.

Since 2018, efforts have rehabilitated 833m2 of sea area and deployed 1,686 hexa-domes, bottle reefs, coral spiders, coral trees, and coral tables.

Education is key, with marine talks fostering awareness of marine life. Eco-friendly practices, from reef-friendly sunscreens to sustainable cleaning products, safeguard both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Visitors engage through a donation program, adopting coral reefs and participating in turtle tagging.

Bawah's commitment to sustainable tourism and marine preservation inspires collective action in safeguarding marine biodiversity, enriching both inhabitants and visitors.
